So, We Are Saving The Universe Again?

Watch a Sneak Peek Here

Sophomore slump is a big problem in the superhero movie business. Especially with a loyal fan base like Marvel, the new movie is always compared to the previous iteration and, usually, it is a letdown. Finding a new way to bring loved characters to life can be more than a lot of directors can handle. But Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 found the answer: Baby Groot.

The sassy little sprout brings a much-needed level of sparkle from the beginning with a personal dance number while an epic tentacle monster battle was happening behind him. This is a set up for the whole movie: epic battle scenes with smartly added humor over a killer soundtrack.

The Guardians are back saving the galaxy in their special dysfunctional way with a new view on some old favorite. Nebula, the blue, cyborg, violence-loving sister of Gamora, becomes a key player in much of the action. She gets to experience the other side of the universe by (reluctantly) joining in on Guardians adventures and even showing some compassion. Thanos’ father skills are in full view when observing the sister dynamic between Gamora and Nebula. It’s hard to get along when Dad turned one of you into a cyborg.

Yondu also comes back for the sequel. He has the whistle of an angel but you never know which side he is fighting for. The blue scavenger is a fan favorite and leads to the most quotable scene from the movie: “I’m Mary Poppins, Y’all.”

Overall, the Guardians return with the same quick action and witty banter you loved portrait_incrediblefrom the first movie. While there was a strong sense of backstory and character building in this part of the anthology, it definitely is not slow by any means. The galaxy is being built before our eyes with planets of beautiful gold humanoids who fight through video consoles and literal living planets; each new adventure holds more secrets of the Guardian universe. While the movie might have not reached the same level of excitement of the original, it more than made up for it in charm, humor, and an unexpected amount of emotional attachments. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 left me with a feeling that all viewers can agree with: We Are Groot.
